1. Introduction

The California Center for Public Health Advocacy's "An Epidemic: Overweight and Unfit Children in California Assembly Districts" is a GIS (Geographic Information System) based informational tool displaying unfit and overweight children in the State of California. The information is broken down to the California Assembly District level.

2. Application Layout

There are four parts to "An Epidemic: Overweight and Unfit Children in California Assembly Districts" GIS application:

3. Navigation

When the application starts the Map Display will show the entire state of California. You may navigate the map either manually or through the use of the Map Display Tool.

Manual Navigation

To make navigation of the Map Display as easy as possible two different sets of navigation tools have been provided.

Internet Standard Navigation

For users more familiar with the more popular internet mapping sites we have provided Direction Pointers and a Slider Bar. You can on any of the eight direction pointers located around the Map Display to move the map in the direction indicated by the pointer. To Zoom in and out of the Map Display, you simply select the level of "magnification" you would like on the slider bar

GIS Standard Navigation

For users more familiar with GIS navigation conventions we have provided zoom in and out "rubber-banding" tools as well as the pan tool. To zoom in or out, select the correct function by clicking on its button to the right of the slider bar under the right hand side of the Map Display. Create a box around the part of the map that you want to zoom in or out of by onto group listings by clicking and holding the mouse button while dragging the pointer diagonally around your selection. To move the map select the Pan tool, and then click and drag the map to the location you would like.

Map Display Tool

To make accessing specific sections of the map easier, certain searches have been pre-selected for your choosing. You can choose from all 80 Assembly Districts, the entire state, Los Angeles Region, or the San Francisco Bay Area Region on the Map Display Tool. Locate the area you want to view on the "Zoom to:" box of the Map Display Tool by using the scroll bar and then select the area by clicking on the area name. One you have selected the area you want to view, press the "Display Map" button under the "Zoom to:" box and the map will show you your selection.

4. Customizing the Map

The Map Display can be customized to suit your needs through the use of the drop down boxes and check boxes found on the Map Display Tool. The Map Display can be customized to show either Unfit or Overweight children. You can also select specific categories of children: boys, girls, 5th grade, 7th grade, or 9th grade.

To change the Map Display, select the criteria you wish to use and then press the "Display Map" button.

5. Selecting

To get detailed information for any Assembly District, simply click within the border of any Assembly District. A new window will open with the information specific to that Assembly District, a link to the complete fact sheet (in PDF Format) for the district, and a link to the Assembly Person's web site.
